Link Love

Have you seen Suneokun's latest project? He is working on "cheat sheets" for each army. These are not your normal weapon and vehicle listings that you pull out of the back of your codex, but actual useful information! First up is Tyranids, and it appears Eldar are next.

GO LOOK NOW!!!

Chapter Masters

Im not impressed with the current rules for the Chapter Master in the new Space Marine Codex... though, this is actually the first time they have included rules for a generic Master in a codex. A long while back, they included a list of upgrades for a Chapter Master in an old White Dwarf. I havnt gone digging though the pile of magazines yet, so Im not updating any of those. What Ive got here is a homebrewed list of options, some will be more useful then others...

In order to keep things from getting too messy, only one Chapter Master using these rules is allowed per army.

The steps for using these Experimental Rules are easy. First, drop the point cost of the Chapter Master in the codex to 100pts. He loses the Orbital Bombardment special rule. This does not apply to any of the special characters.

Second, choose one ability from the following lists, and pay the point cost listed. Entries listed with a * replace Combat Tactics for all models in the army. All stat upgrade choices only affect the Chapter Master's stats.

25 point list
-Orbital Bombardment (as codex, yes, I know.)
-Master at Arms: +1WS, +1A
-Master Marksman: +1BS, may replace bolt pistol and chainsword for a heavy weapon at the cost listed in the Devastator entry.
-Strike from the Sky: Honor Guard and Command Squads may take jump packs for +10pts a model.
-Rites of Battle*: All friendly Space Marine models on the table may use the Chapter Master's LD for all tests aside from Psychic Tests.

50 point list
-Masterful Deployment*: Your reserves get +1 to roll, -OR- your opponent's reserve rolls get -1. You also may reroll the die when attempting to seize the initive.
-Perfect Timing*: +1 initive and you may reroll all reserve rolls (including successful ones)
-No Surrender, No Retreat*: All Space Marine models are Stubborn.
-Quick as Thought*: All Space Marine models gain Fleet.
-Rapid Redeployment*: All dedicated transports may Outflank.
-Armored Rage: Predators may be taken as squadrons of 1-2 vehicles.
-Hold Your Ground*: Any Space Marine unit may take a LD test during the enemy shooting phase, if successful, they gain Feel No Pain for that shooting phase, but may not move during their following movement phase.

Obviously this is not a complete list, Id like to at least double it. What I need now is for people to chime in on whats overvalued, whats too cheap, and most importantly, what to add!

Fun with water...

After that last post, and just before bed, I started touching up those tac symbols... cleaning up black markings on a yellow model is a major pain. I cleaned the lines up with vomit brown, and will be hitting them again in the morning with golden yellow... at least, thats the plan.

I also started work on the Termy Chaplain. First up I fixed the chips where the black undercoat didnt last, then decided to try some new things. I am usually very happy with drybrushing, its quick and easy. Also, my normal method of painting bone is bronzed flesh over black, followed by bleached bone, and a little bit of skull white. One of these got ditched, the other is not used as much as before with the model... Im hoping to finish him this weekend, and maybe be able to share pics...

I gave the entire model a generous drybrush with codex grey. Then, I mixed up two small drops of chaos black with twenty drops of water. I went over the entire model with that 3-4 times. Then I painted all the bone areas with codex grey, let that dry, then put 3-4 layers of the "black water" over that... then because there wasnt much of it left and I was going to bed, I gave the entire model one last coat of it. Thats where its sitting right now.

Im trying to decide if Im going to go through the grey scale up to skull white for the bone areas, or if I want to mix in some bleached bone. Normally, the bone I paint has a "fleshy/tan" look to it, but Im shooting for more of the dead grey look this time.

Also, anyone got any tips on what to do with the crozius? Im thinking the head will be painted gold, but Im considering washing something else into it for fun...

Real Space Marines wear YELLOW!

Heh, last night I finally finished off that Red Scorpion assault squad. All ten jump packers are ready to go!

This morning, I pulled out a tactical squad of the Imperial Fists and finished off their decals, then rebased them. Then I took pics of the Assault Marines and the Tactical squad... and realized that with the wife's computer currently having issues, I have no way to get the pics from the camera to my computer. Bleh. I guess it works out, I noticed while taking pics that the hand painted tactical symbols SUCK. I need to go back and touch them up.

Im still planning that the 4 devastator squad marines are the next I paint for the Red Scorpions, but Im probably going to sneak in something from the Imperial Fists or the Marines Errant before that... Like maybe that Terminator Chaplain thats been gathering dust for years now...

In other news, Ive got an idea for customizing Chapter Masters, and Ill probably put out a new Experimental Rules thing in the next couple of days...

Escalation thing write-up.

Looks like Disorderlies Tyrant is joining in the fun, and Keith is almost confirmed as being in as well! That makes four for the Escalation type thing. I spent a good part of this morning hammering out what should be the guidelines for this mess, and now Ill share them with you all!

500-1000 Gumby list

1000-1999 Set troops, Gumby characters.

2000+ Set troops, Set characters, Gumby "optionals"

(Gumby= flexible, not set in stone, change with a whim.
Optionals= anything beyond the character/unit choice, ie: mounts, equipment/magic items, magic levels, etc.
Set= the unit is set, size and optionals are still adjustable)

Games: At least two games against seperate opponents every "turn". Games happen on Saturdays, unless other plans are made.

Goal is not a win/loss record, but a scaling, controlled environment to learn to use your forces, and give direction to your buying/painting schedule. Having said that, we will keep track of win/loss, to help everyone know what they need to work on beating.

Each turn is two months, unless the entire group thinks the turn can end prior to that. Every turn, the point value goes up by 125 points. Starting at 500, and ending at 2250, unless people agree to continue playing.

Armies are looking like Greenskins (Keith), Dwarfs (Ryan), Dark Elves (DT), and Wood Elves (Mikie). If needed/desired, other armies can be pulled out for practice games, though these will not count towards the 2 game per turn minimum. Tomb Kings, and Warriors of Chaos are open from Ryan; Skaven are run by Mike; Warriors of Chaos, Beastmen, and Ogre Kingdoms are open from DT.

Additions: If anyone knows of someone interested in joining in the fun, let us know and we can discuss allowing them to join in. (Personally, Im willing to allow join-ins at higher point values. The more people playing, the more practice games we get in!)

Poll Closed!

18% for dropping it to 5.
62% for keeping it at 10.
7% for raising it to 15.
11% For raising it to 20.

Keeping it at 10 wins! Lucky for me, cuz I was thinking I wanted to leave it there anyways! ;)

The other three options had some surprises for me though. As many of you wanted it dropped to 5 as those wanting me to raise it, combined. Im guessing its a speed issue, its quicker to open 5 posts then 10...

Im sort of surprised how few voted for raising it to 20, even after the couple of times Ive mentioned how many I cut through each week...

Comments, maybe some ideas or suggestions on making the MTT more interesting?

Escalation Type Project

Mikie has his first 500 points of Wood Elves ready to go, and I spent a good part of yesterday in the in-laws kitchen, assembling Dwarfs. Ive got 500pts of models ready to go. Im thinking we will probably get our first game at this point value in next weekend.

Current plan is that the troops will be staying the same (aside from being added to), though Im pushing for the characters to stay as well... just the "optionals" changing as needed (optionals being mounts, magic items, and wierd stuff).

My list so far is:

Thane w/ shield
14 Warriors w/hand weapons, shields, full command
10 Thunderers w/ shields, full command
1 Cannon w/Engineer

At first I was trying to decide if it were cheesy to take a cannon at this small of a point value, then I realized that he is playing Wood Elves, most of his army skirmishes... Ill be lucky to nail more then two or three of the prancing tree huggers at once!

We are still discussing what sort of increments we will be adding, but it looks like 100-125 at a time, every two months. Very slow additions, but leaves plenty of time to test our lists and decide what else to add.
