Doesnt that figure?

So, ever since 8th edition came out for Fantasy, Ive been putting it off. I toyed with Empire a bit, but for the most part I was willing to sit and wait for the new Tomb Kings book.

Well, a little while back I got nipped by the Fantasy bug, and was looking at the Isle of Blood set, with the intention of starting Skaven... but that kinda died.

Then they stuck the new Greenskins up on Advanced Order and.... I was tempted by a Wild Waaargh! for a night. Then it died. I wasnt really surprised, I just sold off another Ork army.

Last week, the bug stopped nipping, and flat out bit a chunk out of my leg. So, I was looking at Beastmen, and pulled out what I have that could be updated to the current book... which turned out to be three characters and ten centagors. Not a promising start, so I looked at my Empire force. A moment looking at the halberdiers and I almost put them back, then I saw the knights.... a few hours later, Id finished all the armor, and had started on painting horse flesh.

This morning I get up, and go to slap a bit on the knights plumage... and what do I see? Yeah, Tomb Kings in May. Figures.

I think Ill finish painting the 500 points I have, and squirrel some money away for the new dusty goodness.

8th Ed First Game

Went out to play against Deo on Saturday, my first game of Warhammer since before Thanksgiving and moving to the new house... Due to limited space and time, we were only able to get three turns in, but what an interesting three turns!

I brought 2k of Tomb Kings (once I found out that Incantations were not screwed), and he had Skaven. Im not going to give my full list, cuz it sucked very bad (I actually made a 3k list and gutted it down, got rid of the wrong things).

Mission was the Watchtower, I started with a unit of archers in there, I lost that real quick.

If anyone ever says to me "You play TK, you dont have to worry about miscasts" again, I will likely punch them in the neck. Why do I say this? Because my Banner of the Undying Legion miscast on the first turn. Didnt have to worry about anything going crazy, just the banner turning to dust.. But as I rolled the dice, know what happened? Power Outage at the store. Let none doubt the power of Tomb Kings miscasts!

So, anyways. I also got a nice wad of cash from him from selling some Dwarfs, and now I am looking to add to an army, but which one? Not TK, since they are rumored to be getting a new book and models come October. Not really wanting to start something new, so looking at the armies I have, Im considering either Warriors of Chaos or High Elves... We will see.

Remember how I was planning on prepping the Top Ten on Monday Nights from here on out? Yeah, I am working 12s the next couple days. Shot that plan in the foot for this week. So, as I type this, Im looking through stuff. Im hoping to have enough stuff lined up to get it ready as soon as I get home in the morning. And I am back to marking a lot of stuff, instead of just opening them in new tabs, so I might actually get another "The Rest of the Story" up... Maybe.

Slacking off

Didnt get much (any) painting or hobby stuff this weekend, as the inlaws were in town. Did a very belated XMas gift exchange thing, and I received four of the new Warhammer Time of Legends books. We went to Medieval Times, and as I expected, I got the Fantasy bug bite... So, I started reading Nagash the Sorcerer, and now Im casting eyes back towards my Tomb Kings. It figures that I start wanting to paint a Fantasy army that is either next up, or following the next release.

Ive been playing with Google Buzz somewhat lately and figured Id invite those of you who want to follow my feed thing... Fair warning, I can be somewhat offensive at times (both language and what I say), and the links I share might not always be for the sensitive types... If thats fine by you, look me up as Heretic0977. I dont think Ive been really offensive yet, but I might be due...

Like I said earlier, Im reading Nagash the Sorcerer. So far Ive been entertained. Its been keeping me hooked so far... But, I dont think thats really a surprise, as Im a big fan of the Undead in Warhammer.

Oh, while Im thinking about it, RANT!! I am no longer following the Horus Heresy series. Why? "Is it because of how the story went?" Nope. "Is it because of the writing?" Nope. "Price of the books?" Nope. It is because Ravens Flight is only out as an audiobook. "What? Thats a stupid reason!" Yeah, it may be. But, I have a slight attention deficit (and the Grand Canyon is a small hole), and Im always flipping back and forth for reminders about who this was, where that happened, who was where, and stuff like that. Add in that I tend to tune out if Im listening to something (something that annoys my wife to no end), and it is just easier for me to have a paper book in hand. Ive stopped listening to podcasts for the same reason. I enjoy them, but twenty minutes in, I have completely lost any semblence of knowing what they were talking about. So... Why dont I skip Ravens Flight and just move on to the next one? Because I really dont like the flipping between dead tree and audiobook formats, and Im voting with my wallet. Not like they will notice anyways, but meh. My hope is that they start putting out books in both audiobook and dead tree formats. Those who like to listen can, and I get the joy of killing another tree! :)

Regarding Fantasy...

Im still struggling with my ideas for a Warhammer Fantasy army... Up until this morning, these were the main contenders:

Skaven - New book, new models, wide variety of units. One of my favorites, and was the army that got me playing Fantasy in the first place.

Orcs and Goblins - Crazy variety of units, always good for a laugh.

Beastmen - New book coming up looks interesting, always been a fan of the more feral Children of Chaos.

Lizardmen - Models are nice, dinosaurs have always fascinated me.

Tomb Kings - Completely reliable army, new book is on its way. Added advantage of already having a significant amount of models.

So, these were what I was wracking myself over. If I were to choose a single force, I wanted to be sure it was one I could keep working on for the year. Then DT brought this to my attention.

Looks interesting, just gotta play one game on a specific weekend. Not bad at all. Four core choices and 1 dispel scroll? Not a problem. 2500 points, fully painted? Hrm. I have a good chunk of Tomb Kings, that wouldnt take too much work to get to 2500 fully painted points... But I have none of the Special units that are useful, like Carrion or Tomb Scorpions, and with the new book on its way, I dont know how easily I could lay hands on some, or if Id even want to.

I was planning that if I went with the Tomb Kings, I was going to start from scratch with the new book. New plastic skeletons and Tomb Guard are pretty much a given, and most of the rest of the stuff I have could use an update... But maybe Ill think about going with the dead ones in 2010, and just expand on what I have instead.

Stuff here and there...

A few different things tonight, sort of a head clearer for now...

A while back I mentioned my Dark Elves, 5 months later I finally got around to priming the models... whoops. They are now sitting on my desk, and Im actually planning on moving ahead with them very soon (either tomorrow or the next day). Still not entirely sure of the paint scheme, though I do know I want a dark metal look to them, so Ill be giving them a coat of darkened BG metal, followed by a wash or two of black. Im mainly trying to decide between red and blue for the cloth areas...
---

This week starts the TTT over at FtW, gonna be kinda quiet on my ol' blog, and to be honest, Im expecting my traffic to drop significantly. So, what is the future of OtPT? More of my random ramblings I think. But I will still be here. :)

Ive been thinking about what, if anything, I wanted to change about the TTT. I considered sticking to just 40k stuff, and I thought about limiting it to painting and modelling posts. Both ideas got shot down real quick. I was also trying to decide if I should stop posting stuff from the others who post at FtW, since the list will be hosted there... I said screw that idea. No reason to penalize them just for where they post their good stuff. As of right now, the only things that automatically get ignored for the list is stuff thats obviously offensive, and my own stuff. Yes, I know Id be biased towards my own stuff, so I dont even let it in... not that Ive had much thats TTT worthy posted yet. ;)

In the end, there was one idea I had that I am still fighting over. Do I start the numbering over at #1, or do I continue the numbers at #28? Personally, Im leaning towards continuing the numbering, as it shows there is continuity, and this is not something new (for the new readers) and that this is the TTT you know and love (for the previous readers).
---

The Black Legion is still up on the shelf, fighting for space with The Purge. The unfinished BL models are ranked up on the table itself, along with a platoon of Cadians. The IG have their green done, and Ive got the black mostly done on one squad, gonna finish them off before moving onto the next, I think. The Dark Elves complete the mess in front, and I think most of them will be shoved aside to make room, so that I can actually paint. Im thinking the BL will be boxed up again, so I can make room for the Red Scorpions again, Ive had the urge to paint Imperial Space Marines again...
---

Ive been looking at my Tomb Kings book again, and if Mikie and I can actually get a game in, I might have to run them, seeing as he has a good number of Skaven now... Ive been sorta "wish-listing" their book lately, maybe Ill put that up later on...

500 Points of FUN!

This past weekend I drooled on my army books a lot, trying to decide where Im going with this new army bug Ive got. The answer? Nowhere new.

Plain and simple, I cant find anything new and exciting I havnt touched on before, but Ive got a closet full of stuff Ive not done anything with at all. So, I decided to make a 500 point list for each of the fantasy armies Ive got models for, and hopefully will give them each a run in the fairly near future. Im not sure if Ill expand on any of them, but having the lists will make quick pick up games easier... I actually have all the models needed for each of these, though a few still need to be assembled, like the High Elves and the Bretonnians.

Doing the army shuffle...

Im rethinking some armies, rebuilding projects, and looking ahead tonight.

Imperial Army - Im gonna consolidate the two projects back into a single project I think. It was an amusing idea, but I dont really have the motivation to do anything with it. My current plan (this week! ;D) is to finish what I am working on with the Space Marines, assemble my Imperial Guard and paint them up too. Eventually I want to add an order of Sisters of Battle (prolly the Order of the Bloody Rose), and some Grey Knights... and maybe even an Inquisitor or two! But additions are down the road.

Main plans are Red Scorpion, Imperial Fist, and Marines Errant forces finished up to complete battle companies, and have at least one of every entry in the codex painted. After the IG codex is out, Ill be working on my Cadian 42nd (because 42 is the answer!).

Army of the Dark Gods - This will be the dark mirror of the Imperial Army project. Lots of Chaos Marines, working under the banner of Abaddon (but that doesnt mean Ill be using him!). Ill add some traitor guardsmen to the mix, and hope that GW eventually realizes that people would like to see the LatD list resurface. Daemons will also be involved, but this project is waiting in line behind everything else for now.

Main plans are to fix my Black Legion models, and probably expand on them and The Purge. I havnt really decided where I want to go with them from there, but Im half thinking a second traitor legion will be contributing troops...

The Walking Dead - This is my Fantasy project. Currently its my Tomb Kings, but I want to work up a Vampire Counts force... I had an idea a while back to do a "Historical Carstein" army. The idea was that Id have about 5k worth of models, with large games being led either by Vlad or Manfred, while smaller games would be led by Konrad, or maybe Manfred the Acolyte. This would be the first time Ive actually built an army around special characters. One of the ideas I was playing with was the whole army of Sylvania thing... having the dead, and playing around with the Empire list as well, for the living occupants of those evil lands.

Main plans here are to finish painting the Tomb Kings, expand them to 3000 points, and create a playable 500 or 1000 point list for the Vampire Counts... and eventually decide if Im going to do the Sylvanian Empire list.

Eventually I want to do a second Fantasy project, but Im not sure what it will be. Maybe if I dont do the Sylvanian Empire, Ill do my Akhaz Boki Dwarfs with Empire allies...

Saturday Gaming

Vacation is over, back to work!

Mikie and I threw down again this weekend, a pair of 2000 point Fantasy games. Still Tomb Kings against Skaven. I stuck with my list for the most part, just swapping out the Cloak of the Dunes on my heirophant for a sword on the Tomb King. He was still looking for the feel of the Skaven, and tried a few different lists. I won the first game, but Im not too sure what to call the second one. I realistically only had a single unit left, but there was next to nothing he could really do about that unit.

I also finally added a bit more terrain, in the form of a pair of styrofoam hills. Ill need to paint them up soon...

Lessons!

Tomb Guard led by the Tomb King, and equipped with the Banner of the Undying Legion are HARD. These guys took a flank charge from a rat swarm and a frontal charge from Stormvermin, then another frontal charge (after the stormies fled), and were still kicking ass at the end of the game.

S4/T4 is a lot more special in fantasy then it is in 40k. A lot more useful too.

Cloak of the Dunes was wasted previously, but would have been moderately useful in this weekends first game... and would have saved my Heirophant in the second game.

Archers and hills make for great friends.

The Bone Giant was a lot more useful this time around, and Relentless Assault is a lot of fun!

I now have a special hatred for Gutter Runner Tunneling Teams. I might have to get a tomb scorpion to return the favor.

Im trying to decide if I should ditch the king for a prince, and upgrade the heirophant for a high priest. I never have enough spells to do all that I need to do...

Saturday Gaming

Finally got a few games in this weekend against Mikie (one of these days Ill play Keith!)... First game was Red Scorpions against Space Wolves, 500pts.

Ouch.

I took the captain, two units of 5 tac troops with nifty sergeants, and a unit of 5 assault troops. He took a large unit of Blood Claws (10-12 I think), a WG Battle Leader with 4 wolves, and a pack of 5 grey hunters. I got stupid and fed my units piecemeal to the blood claws and battle leader, and lost that one hard.

The second game was much more interesting. 2000 points of Tomb Kings vs Skaven. This was something like his 6th game of fantasy, but his first at this high of points.

I took:
Tomb King w/Shield, light armor, Crown of Kings
Liche Priest w/Cloak of the Dunes, dispel scroll
Liche Priest w/ Skeletal Steed, dispel scroll
14 Skeletal Archers w/command
14 Skeletal Archers w/command
25 Skeletal Warriors w/ Spear, shield, command
25 Skeletal Warriors w/ Spear, shield, command
23 Tomb Guard w/command, Banner of the Undying Legion
Bone Giant
8 Light Horsemen

He had (from memory)
Grey Seer
2 Warlock Engineers w/most of their kit, 1 had Storm daemon, one or both had dispel scrolls.
2 large units of Skavenslaves
2 30+ units of Clanrats w/ ratling guns
a large unit of Plaguemonks
a unit of stormvermin w/ ratling gun
2 Rat Ogres
3 jezzails

As people know, I suck at battle reports, so Ill just toss things we learned out there.

Despite having M6, a Bone Giant is fairly slow if not near the general. I almost managed to get a single charge off with him the entire game. Didnt, because the unit to be charged failed its Terror check. The unit fled and was gone-gone, and worth about 200 points, so he did make his points value, sorta.

Plaguemonks will chew through a unit of spear armed skeletons fairly quickly.

Stormvermin do not like being flanked charged by Tonb Guard led by the Tomb King.

Light Horsemen were fairly useful at range, and made a decent shield for the horse mounted Liche Priest.

Im not convinced that the Cloak of the Dunes was entirely useful. The Heirophant wisped around a lot, but overall didnt really need to.

I love having a set casting order, and I love having it down on paper in the army book. Id forget my own head if it wasnt glued on.

Skaven are AWESOME to watch from the other side of the table. Seeing Jezzails and Ratling guns explode was very amusing. Only thing better is playing them (and building your army around the "wonderweapons").

I was reminded how little of the Tomb Kings army I have left to paint: a unit of 14 archers need to be finished; 2 chariots (not used this game) need work; and all my characters are in various states of having just been started. Not too much at all.

I think Rat Ogres need to be taken in units of 4+. The two hardly did anything before they broke and ran.
