Doesnt that figure?

So, ever since 8th edition came out for Fantasy, Ive been putting it off. I toyed with Empire a bit, but for the most part I was willing to sit and wait for the new Tomb Kings book.

Well, a little while back I got nipped by the Fantasy bug, and was looking at the Isle of Blood set, with the intention of starting Skaven... but that kinda died.

Then they stuck the new Greenskins up on Advanced Order and.... I was tempted by a Wild Waaargh! for a night. Then it died. I wasnt really surprised, I just sold off another Ork army.

Last week, the bug stopped nipping, and flat out bit a chunk out of my leg. So, I was looking at Beastmen, and pulled out what I have that could be updated to the current book... which turned out to be three characters and ten centagors. Not a promising start, so I looked at my Empire force. A moment looking at the halberdiers and I almost put them back, then I saw the knights.... a few hours later, Id finished all the armor, and had started on painting horse flesh.

This morning I get up, and go to slap a bit on the knights plumage... and what do I see? Yeah, Tomb Kings in May. Figures.

I think Ill finish painting the 500 points I have, and squirrel some money away for the new dusty goodness.

Painting Table Update

In an effort to put off working on anything else that I should be doing, you get a post!

Lets start off with the Red Scorpions. Ive got Loth basecoated with a dark blue, and will be moving onto a lighter blue for the armor soon. The rest of the new Red Scorpions are still sitting in their primer. Ive not gotten around to ordering more shoulder pads yet, and likely wont until mid-month. Still havnt decided on how I will equip the last three models for my command squad.

STATUS: Slow/Stalled.

My Empire army is in a box, in the storage room. I got the halberdiers up to the white drybrush and lost all interest. I might pick them back up sooner or later, then again, I might not. Ive been looking at Skaven a bit more lately. I like the look, and the feel of the army, but I am still not sure about all that brown.

STATUS: Stalled/Dead

Black Legion. Ive got a Black Legion army, have I mentioned it before? Im sure I have... Its over 4k points of fully painted goodness, and has actually won Best Painted at a tournament I went to WAAAYY back when (when? 5 years or so). What does this have to do with anything? Well, I am getting my sis-in-law to take decent photos of it, then I will be selling it. I havnt decided whether I want to post it on eBay or try to sell it through the blog, or even though the Bartertown or whatever... Ill let you all know. Im planning on using the funds to either add to the Red Scorpions, or maybe something new. ;)

STATUS: Circling the drain.

WarmaHordes, Malifaux, and other games are starting to look more interesting, and with the Bunker no longer being the base for most of my wargaming needs, there is less reason to hold back. Ive almost decided to back-burner my Cryx, though I havnt decided whether to start Cygnar or Gatormen minions. I do want to work on them more now, though.

STATUS: Gaining steam.

Actual gaming... Havnt done any of that since the last time DT and I played WarmaHordes (which I never got around to posting about, whoops! Suffice to say, I got stomped!). I really need to get around to that soon, before we get another Snowpacalypse.

Online gaming. Yeah, I am still addicted to WoW, but Ive been messing with Blood Bowl more lately. Havnt gotten Legendary yet, but soon!

Links and Stuff

Lets see.. First some link sharing. I like to think I am among the first to promote healthy competition, so here is the newest contender in the Top "N" lists, from Brent and Lauby over at House of Paincakes.

Weekly Top X

They are not sticking to a particular number, just what seems to fit. I also REALLY like their banter format, so much nicer then my brief blurbs.

Also up, Inquisitor Lord Aki has been putting together a "40k News, Rumors, and Stuff You Shouldn't Miss" list. I think he has put a few of them out, but dont quote me on that...

40k News, Rumors, and Stuff You Shouldn't Miss

Go. Read. Enjoy. COMMENT! (Trust me, comments make doing the next list so much easier!)

Lets see, rambling stuff... Went to the Glen Burnie Battle Bunker over the weekend, stood around for three hours while everyone else gamed, couldnt find anyone who "didnt bring an army", or "is waiting for someone else", and finally got bored and left. Kinda left me in a 40k funk. Bleh. Havnt pulled out my Red Scorpions since, but kinda toying with an idea for some Night Lords from before or during the Heresy, using the Blood Angels codex. We will see.

On the Fantasy side, Ive not really touched my Empire in a while, much to the surprise of no one who knows me. Those new High Elves are looking pretty sexy however, especially the Phoenix Guard. My biggest complaint about the models before was how they looked like they were wearing miniskirts. Not an issue any longer!

Other news: Ive burnt out my 5th or 6th video card on my desktop, and rather then throwing money at it like before, I am saying screw it. With how often this has happened, we are thinking its either a power supply issue, or a motherboard issue. One is a cheap fix, the other not, but I would have to get another video card on top of it either way. So, I am sharing computers with the Wife. This promises to be an adventure!

Oh, TRotS? Probably tomorrow. Maybe.

State of the Empire

So, I finally got my Empire army assembled, and today I actually got them primed. Next up is painting. So, obviously this is my last chance to reconsider my Reikland/Altdorf theme. Think, think, think... Ok, Im done, on with the plan!

So, the question now is how do I reflect that theme in such a small and diverse force? Well, that part is actually going to be easy. The hard part will working that diversity back into a coherent army.

This is my plan currently:

General: Mostly armor, but the little bits of cloth will have the Altdorf colors.

Wizards: Obviously will have the colors of their schools (red for the Fire, dark purple for the Death).

Halberdiers: I figure the "poorer" Reikland will provide the melee state troops to start off with, so these guys will be painted in an off white.

Handgunners: These guys will represent Altdorf, so a red/blue scheme is in the works. Not sure if I will quarter or half these guys, but something like that.

Reiksguard: These guys have an obvious color set, but I am thinking of adding a small red trim to the barding, just for kicks. I havnt decided whether the horses will be brown or grey, but it will be one of those two, and I want to keep it the same for the full unit.

Greatswords: I have three options for these guys. Paint them as Altdorf, ordinary Reikland, or as the Carroburg Greatswords. Two of the three options will match the rest of my army fine... the third would just look awesome. I could save that for a later unit of Greatswords though.

As far as actually painting, these are my plans. They are all primed white, aside from the Knights and Amethyst Wizard.

Reikland White: Im thinking a couple washes of bleached bone to get it started, maybe a bit of snakebite leather or bubonic brown to tint it, followed up with a quick drybrush of skull white.

Altdorf Red/Blue: I am thinking I may finally break out that mechrite red thats been sitting around for a while and play with that, followed up with some blood red. The blue will be Ultramarines blue with a black wash, followed by a touch-up.

Armor/weapons: These will get my usual coat of Boltgun Metal, followed by a black wash and BGM touch-up. The Knights will get a bit of Chainmail after that to shine things up.

So, plans made, there is just one thing left to consider: how do I base them (probably brown dirt with static grass)...

Games Day 2010?

Something made me think about Games Day this year, and I got the idea that I should go, before they relocate it to somewhere I wont be willing to pay to go (that is a surprisingly large list).

So yeah, in order for me to make this more enjoyable then the last few Ive been to (I have been to 3-4 of them over the years, never really had much fun), I figured I should bring an army and maybe get a few games in while there. Maybe set something up for people who want payback for me skipping their amazingly awesome blog posts on the Top Ten. ;)

What to bring? How many points? What system? Well, Ive got my Red Scorpions, but Im betting Fantasy will be fairly big this year for some odd reason.... Say, dont I have an Empire army in the works?

This is what I am thinking: I will bring two 1000 point lists, one for the Red Scorpions and one for the Empire. Small enough that I can get a few games in over there, and haul it all in a single case.

This leaves just a single problem: The Empire are only half assembled. Only one model has any paint on it at all. I have less then a month to get them ready... Should be an interesting month!

Empire started!

So, I went shopping this weekend, and got the start of my Empire army. After I got it home and spent some time sniffing the new plastic smell (admit it, you do it too!), I got around to assembling some of it. So far, Ive got the Bright Wizard and Handgunners complete (aside from basing), all the horses for the Knights ready, and half of the knights themselves mostly assembled.

Before I went and spent the cash, I made up my 1,000 point list.

General of the Empire (1#, 130 pts)
1 General of the Empire @ 130 pts (General; Hand Weapon)
1 Hammer of Justice
1 Armor of Meteoric Iron

Bright Battle Wizard (1#, 125 pts)
1 Battle Wizard @ 125 pts (Level 2 Upgrade; Hand Weapon)
1 Dispel Scroll

Celestial Battle Wizard (1#, 125 pts)
1 Battle Wizard @ 125 pts (Level 2 Upgrade; Hand Weapon)
1 Luckstone

State Troops (20#, 120 pts)
19 Halberdiers @ 120 pts (Musician Mus; Standard Bearer Std; Hand Weapon; Halberd; Light Armour)
1 Sergeant (Hand Weapon; Halberd; Light Armour)

State Troops (10#, 115 pts)
9 Handgunners @ 115 pts (Musician Mus; Standard Bearer Std; Hand Weapon; Handgun)
1 Marksman (Hand Weapon; Repeater Handgun)

Knightly Orders (8#, 244 pts)
7 Knightly Orders @ 244 pts (Musician Mus; Standard Bearer Std; Barding; Hand Weapon; Lance & Shield x7; Full Plate Armor)
1 Preceptor (Hand Weapon; Lance; Full Plate Armor; Shield)
1 Steel Standard
8 Warhorse

Greatswords (10#, 130 pts)
9 Greatswords @ 130 pts (Musician Mus; Standard Bearer Std; Hand Weapon; Great Weapon; Full Plate Armor; Stubborn)
1 Count's Champion (Hand Weapon; Great Weapon; Full Plate Armor)

Total Roster Cost: 989

I am not entirely happy with taking a Lord at just 1k, but I needed something to fill the points, and Id already maxed out Heroes with the Wizards. On the bright side, I limited his magic items, and the Empire General is rather lackluster compared to other Lords. Shouldnt be too over the top. The main thing that I wanted to include but am missing right now is a war machine of some sort. Not sure if I want a mortar or helstorm rockets or what, but I think that one will be a priority when I bump up the point value of my list. Either way, I need to finish assembling and painting what Ive got so far!

Oh, and I noticed I was wrong about something: The Imperial Gunnery School is in Nuln, the Imperial School of Engineers is in Altdorf, so my engineers will wear the red and blue!

Starting work on the Empire

Tomorrow morning I am heading out to my local GW to get an Empire Battalion box set, and likely another comparatively cheap box/blister pack. Im trying to decide between a Cannon, more Handgunners, a Warrior Priest or a box of Mages.

Today I spent a good amount of time working on that Valten model Ive been hoarding for years now. I really like how he is turning out, but my camera refuses to take a decent picture. Bleh. Anyway, he will make a good Captain for low point games, and a nice General for higher.

So, the expanded idea for my Empire army is to base it around Altdorf and the Reikland. Altdorf is home to the Church of Sigmar, the Reiksguard, and the Colleges of Magic. I want to say there is another Knightly Order around there, but I cant remember off the top of my head. The only significant organizations not represented are the College of Engineers and the Church of Ulric. This works out that my state troops wear either off white, or red and blue uniforms (except the Carroburg Greatswords!). I am planning that any war machines will wear the standard uniforms, but engineers will wear the colors of Nuln. The end result will be a riot of colors. How am I going to tie it all together as a cohesive army? Good question. Not entirely sure yet, besides basing.

Coincidentally, this gives plenty of fluff reasons to include all the special characters besides Luthor Huss, and its even possible for him to be in the area, spreading the word of Sigmar's return. However, I do want to create a character of my own to be the leader when the Emperor and his cronies are busy elsewhere, thus enters Klaus Franz, nephew of the Emperor, and General of the Empire. I am thinking that cool Captain with the hammer and pistol will be the base for this model.

The short list, shortened.

Alrighty, I had a nice list of eleven (or so) potentials that I was looking at, and Ive managed to gut it down to three. Gonna talk through them, maybe give myself reason to pick one over the others.

Black Legion Chaos Marines - These guys are in the lead right now, for the main reasons that I have a ton of them, and they are mostly painted. Any money I throw at them is going to go into the more fun to paint models, and tanks.

Imperial Guard - Ive also got a significant amount of Cadians, though only a few of them are even in the color scheme I want. There is also a lot of stuff Ill need to pick up, like tanks and psykers and more troops.

Empire - I actually dont own any Empire models right now, but Ive been toying with an idea for a Reikland/Altdorf themed force for a good while now. One of the biggest reasons they are on the list however, is that I am going to Midieval Times this weekend with the wife and inlaws, and I know thats going to inspire me to do something with horses...

Right now, the Cadians are taking up the desktop real estate, but Im thinking of swapping them out with the Black Legion when I get home.
