Breaking rules and trying something new

Ive been lucky with my painting. My style is quick and easy, almost sloppy at times. Yet, you get me to paint 60 models in the same scheme, and it looks pretty damn good if I do say so myself. And, guessing by the "Best Painted Army" awards I got when I did the tournament thing, other people thought I did pretty good too. Of course, what happens when you think you have a good thing? You dont push yourself to expand your skills all that much. The bar is set, and I only try to reach that high.

Ive decided to try to aim higher. Maybe all those pretty pictures from the Top Tens have finally gotten to me. The other night I ordered the full set of P3 paints, they should be arriving on Friday, hopefully before I leave for the Frozen North for the weekend. I also decided to break my "No New Armies" rule, and ordered the Protectorate of Menoth battle box. I am going to take this weekend learning how to paint better. No drybrushing. Minimal washing. Its time to learn how to highlight, to shade, maybe even blending.

Wish me luck.

Good luck, and you can certainly accomplish this. Bright, full spectrum lighting and quality brushes are a must for this endeavor.

Also the Coolminiornot.com forums are fantastic for technique and WIP feedback.

This is an excellent plan to strive toward and recognize that you don't want to get stale.

Just a tip:

When I started forcing myself to mix things up, I did the same thing and threw out drybrushing and washing.

What I discovered is that while I liked the style I created, dry brushing does have it's place, but more important is that washes are still very important.

Don't listen to me though - try developing something new, and you'll grow more, coming out of it with more skill and techniques under your belt because of it.

You'll do fine.
What bad can come of trying to expand your painting horizons.

The painting, you know I have no room to speak having given that up for an army of paint-servants.

On the other hand, I do mock you for moving into my Protectorate territory and promise you a thorough beating should you ever deign to darken my door again.

(and note that I am moving in November to a new house, so, hurry up alredy)

Good luck. P3 is a great choice by the way. It may take a bit to get used to it as it works a bit differently and mixes way differently but the line really is top notch and pretty much all I use anymore for both brush and airbrush work.
